Web Site Directory The Big Bell, the Iron Bell, Belle of the Bay— there seems to he no shortage of names for the island in Conception Bay on the eastern end of Newfoundland First settled by farmers, Bell Island became a thriving mining community during the late 1800's. The mines were closed by 1966, and, sadly, the island’s population has dwindled to a mere 4,000 since. Like many resource-based communities going through hard times Bell Island is looking for new ways to thrive. The site profiles what the community has to offer tourists, including underground mine tours and scenic hiking. It also presents a detailed history of the island, a photo album and a mailing list to keep abreast of what’s happening there Locals will be interested in the e-mail addresses for present and former islanders a community policing newsletter and a message hoard where you can drop by to post greetings or dig for clues to possible family connections |
