FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT
MARCH 25th, 2007

This week the Church gathers in the cathedrals of dioceses all over the world to bless the Holy Oils and to consecrate the Chrism that will be used in every Parish throughout the next year. The Bishop of each diocese will come together with his priests and the people for the Chrism Mass. In this liturgy the Bishop, as chief shepherd of the diocese, will pray over and bless the oil of the sick and the oil of catechumens. Then he will consecrate the sacred chrism: olive oil mixed with balsam or other perfume.
In these oils the Church has long seen an image of Christ, God’s anointed one: the one who through the oil of the sick, heal; the one who, through the oil of catechumens, strengthens; and the one who, in the sacred chrism, blesses and consecrates, claiming for God those things and people who are anointed with it. These oils, which are made from crushed olives and which are used for the life of the Church, are images of him who was crushed for the life of the world.
The Holy Oils are then distributed to every Parish to be used in the coming celebrations of Baptism and Confirmation at Easter, as well as throughout the year. As a sign of the unity of the diocese, the oils also speak to the Church’s unity in Christ. Some parishes solemnly receive these oils on the night of Holy Thursday, during the evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper at the Preparation of the Gifts. All of us should see in them not only an image of Christ the Lord and of His Church, but also an image of ourselves as those who are called to follow the Lord, through all that threatens to crush us, and to the everlasting life he promises.
First Reading: Isaiah 43: 16-21
I am about to do a new thing: I will give drink to my chosen people.
Second Reading: Philippians 3.8-14
I have suffered the loss of all things, and I regard them as rubbish, so that I may attain Christ.
Gospel: John 8. 1-11
Let anyone among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone.

A sincere Thank-You to all who helped co-ordinate and support our Annual St. Patrick’s Day weekend celebrations. I offer thanks to the businesses who sponsored ads in our booklet; the patrons of all the events; the many participants of the concert, especially the youth of our Parish; the organizers and supporters of the concert, the card game and the stew supper; and to all others who are behind the scenes who do such great tasks with little recognition. Our events were a great success and to all we offer you a heartfelt thanks and praise.
