SOLEMNITY OF THE NATIVITY OF SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST
JUNE 24th, 2007

He must increase; I must decrease.

Since the early Church, John the Baptist has been revered as one of the greatest of saints. He is the one who is the precursor of the Word made flesh. Jesus calls him the greatest person born (Luke 7:28. John’s birth is one of three that is honored and celebrated by the Church; the other two are the birth of the Lord and the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary. We have always seen in John a model of discipleship and of what it means to make Christ the center of one’s life. In addition to celebrating the birth of John the Baptist, the Church also celebrates his martyrdom, his beheading.
The solemnity of the Nativity of John the Baptist is six months before the solemnity of the Nativity of the Lord. In his account of the Annunciation, Saint Luke includes the reference that Elizabeth was already six months pregnant when Mary conceived Christ in her womb. Thus, counting backward from Christmas, June 24 was picked as the day on which to honor John’s birth.
It is no accident that the summer and winter solstices take place just before the Church celebrates the births of John and Christ. On June 21 the sun’s course changes, and the natural light begins to decrease. On December 21 it changes again, and from that point on the light increases. Even the cosmos takes note of these two comings into the world!

First Reading: Isaiah 49.1-6
I will give you as a light to the nations.
Second Reading: Acts 13.22-26
John proclaimed a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.
Gospel: Luke 1.57-66, 80
His name is John

Cemetery Cleanup
The days are getting closer for our annual celebration of the Cemetery Mass. However, our cemetery is a place we ought to care for at all times and therefore, you are asked to clean up the resting place of your loved ones during the coming weeks. It is the policy that no fences be erected in the cemetery and that the grave site must not have shrubs, trees, flowers or gravel which prevent the easy access of the lawn movers from cutting the grass. Please do not throw garbage near the grave site of another family plot. Please remove the debris from the cemetery or put it in the location where the main garbage site is identified. Thank-You

Canada Day
July 1 is celebrated as Canada’s birthday. Canadians should seek to be witnesses to Christ in Canada and the world, and to continue working to influence those in government to act from Christian principles and attitudes. Christians, realizing they do not have a listing home here, should pray and work for justice and peace in Canada and throughout the world, so that all God’s people may share in the goods of this earth. God’s kingdom will come only when all people are ready to let Christ’s teaching guide and rule their lives and actions.
