FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
JULY 15th , 2007

Introduction:
Today we will hear again the great parable of the Good Samaritan. In this parable Jesus tells us that God wants us to care for one another. The priest and the levite stand condemned for a sin, not of commission but of omis¬sion - they refused to help the man who got beaten up. Sins of omission may be our worst sins, yet we don’t think of them as sins.

First Reading: (Deut. 30:10-14). Moses urges the people to obey God's law, not as something imposed from outside them, but as something that springs up from inside themselves.

Second Reading: (Colossians 1:15-20). Paul asserts the absolute supremacy of Christ. He is the beginning and end of creation, the head of the Church, and the universal mediator and redeemer.

Gospel: (Luke 10:25-37). This relates Christ's immortal parable of the Good Samartian.
The First Reading is part of Moses' farewell speech to the Israelites. He exhorts them to commit themselves to the Lord by observing his com¬mandments. Whereas previously these commandments were considered as being external to them, now they are presented as springing from within themselves. They are written in their hearts, and therefore are not far away from them or beyond their strength. Jesus reduced the command¬ments to two (Gospel).

The lawyer's question was meant to embarrass Jesus. But Jesus clev¬erly put the onus back on the lawyer. So the lawyer tries again: he seeks casuistically to know to whom the commandment 'love your neighbour' applies. Basically what Jesus says to him is: our neighbour is anyone, regardless of class, colour, race, or creed who needs our help.

Reverence
Eucharistic amazement is expressed in reverence and in the dignity and care brought to every celebration of Mass. These are attitudes that befit not only the priest and other sacred ministers, but all the baptized. Through Baptism and Confirmation, God has prepared his children to stand in his presence and offer him worship. “Christian,” says Saint Leo the Great, “know your dignity”. (Sermon I on the Birth of the Lord.).
The first school of reverence is the home. Children can learn from their earliest years to make the sign of the cross slowly and deliberately, to kneel in adoration, to listen quietly, to stand in attention, and to treat holy things with respect. Adults can show by their example that the Church is the house of God and that the Mass is the holiest of mysteries. In true reverence there is nothing constrained or artificial. Reverence is a joyful and gracious thing, akine to the wonder of one who finds himself face-to-face with a great beauty, or heart-to –heart with great love. To every word and gesture of the Mass give the imprint of reverence. “I bow down before your holy temple,” says the psalms “filled with awe: (Psalm 5:8).
