THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
JULY 1ST, 2007

Ordinary Time During Summer:

During Ordinary Time during summer, the Sunday liturgies of the Church focus on the public life and ministry of Jesus. Notice that in these months the readings for Sundays are centered on the parables, teaching, miracles, and sayings of Jesus. During this year’s Gospel of Luke, the readings chronicle his journey to Jerusalem and the cross, which was the culmination of his mission here on earth.
Although many think of summer as the time for taking off, the liturgies of the Church call us to fasten our belts around our waist and take care that our lamps are lit, waiting for the master. It is the time to give attention to how we live as followers of the crucified one. It is time for us to focus on our lives as Christian lives.
In the liturgies of Ordinary Time during these months, we get a taste of Summer School for Disciples. Of course, the greatest action we do as disciples is to gather in the name of the Lord and to break the bread; that is, to participate in the Eucharist. For here the life of the disciple is given clear meaning and direction; to proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes in glory. Each and every Sunday we do this with faith and in joy, trusting that the Lord is with us until the end of time.

First Reading: 1 Kings 19.16b, 19-21
Elisha set out, followed Elijah, serving him.
Second Reading: Galatians 5.1, 13-18
You were called to freedom.
Gospel: Luke 9.51-62
Jesus set his face resolutely toward Jerusalem.

This Weeks Bulletin is in Memory of the War Veterans who so courageously died at Beaumont - Hamel on July 1st, 1916. May They Rest in Peace.
