SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
February 11th, 2007

A tree that is planted by the riverside grows and bears fruit. In the same way, those who trust in God are truly blessed. As we gather in this house of God, let us ask God to increase our trust in him and reliance on him.
First Reading: Jeremiah 17: 5-8......The life of those who trust in man is as precarious as that of a shrub growing in the desert. Whereas the life of those who trust in God is as sure as that of a tree growing by the waterside.
Second Reading: 1Cor 15:12, 16-20.....The resurrection of Christ is the foundation on which our faith and hope rest.
Gospel: Luke 6:17, 20-26.....This contains Luke’s version of the Beatitudes, (Whereas Matthew has nine Beatitudes, Luke has only four, with however, four corresponding ‘woes’).
SCRIPTURE NOTE:
For this and the following two Sundays we will be reading from Luke’s Sermon on the Plain’ which parallels Matthew’s ‘Sermon on the Mount’.
Glares the poor blessed. The poor are the ‘little ones’ who have trust in but God.
The Beatitudes echo the program Jesus announced in the synagogue at Nazareth. Whereas Matthew has nine Beatitudes, Luke has only four, with however, four corresponding ‘woes’

Letter from Diocese of Grand Falls
Dear Faithful People:

The year 2009 will mark the 100th Anniversary of the establishment of the first Council of the Knights of Columbus in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
During these past 100 years, the dedication and participation of the Knights in the social and religious life of the province forms a proud chapter of history.
As a Fraternal Organization of Catholic Men, the Knights touch the lives of many people and give strong witness to their Catholic faith.

On behalf of myself, Archbishop O’Brien of St. John’s, and Bishop Crosby of St. George’s & Labrador, I thank the Knights for their strong promotion of family life, to the assistance they give to brother Knights in distress, and the help they bring in time of disaster, both in financial and in volunteer hours in the province of Newfoundland & Labrador.

The Knights are also to be commended for the service they give to the church especially in their strong support of the Bishops in the cause of human life and the sanctity and dignity of marriage. I take this opportunity to join with my brother Bishops in encouraging every Catholic man to think seriously of becoming a member of the Knights of Columbus - the largest Catholic fraternal organization in the world.

Sincerely,

+Most Rev. Martin W. Currie
Bishop of Grand Falls
State Chaplain
Knights of Columbus, NL

Did you know?.....
That Pope Benedict XV1 has declared a plenary indulgence for the World Day of the Sick being celebrated this Sunday, Feb. 11th. A decree issued on January 25, 2007 grants the indulgence to those who participate in the Mass for the World Day of the Sick in Seoul, Korea and to those who participate in a similar ceremony that day “at any other place decided by the ecclesiastical authorities.” The indulgence is also granted to health-care personnel whose duties make it impossible for them to attend ceremonies for the World Day of the Sick, and to the sick who cannot attend the ceremonies, if they pray for the welfare of the sick on that day.

Happy Birthday
Happy Birthday to Mrs. Jean Hunt who will be celebrating her 80th birthday on Sunday, Feb. 11th. Best Wishes from all of us.
