EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
August 5th, 2007

How much is enough?
Possessions exercise a big hold over the human heart. But when we are preoccupied with material possessions we forget the more important things in life. Jesus said our main concern should be to `make ourselves rich in the sight of God.' Let us examine ourselves briefly on our attitude to possessions.

SCRIPTURE NOTE:
The First Reading casts a cold eye on the vanity of human life. One exam¬ple of this 'vanity' is all the toil people put into acquiring wealth, only to have to leave it all to their heirs. The author is making the point that the things that are supposed to satisfy human beings do not satisfy them. Only faith in God and in an afterlife can provide a light in the darkness.
The Gospel is part of a longer section which deals with the difficulties that possessions can cause for the disciples of Jesus. Here Jesus refuses to get involved in a family dispute. Instead, he focuses on the cause of the dispute - greed for possessions. His parable stresses the foolishness of depending on material things for one's security rather than on God. In his search for security and happiness in this life, the rich man forgets God, forgets eternal life, and forgets his obligations to the poor. He is truly a 'fool' because he has not known how to use wisely the wealth which he had.

First Reading: Ecclesiastes 1.2; 2.21-23
What do mortals gains from a life of toil and strain:
Second Reading: Colossians 3.1-5, 9-11
Seek the things that are above, where Christ reigns.
Gospel: Luke 12.13-21
All these things you have prepared, whose will they be?

It Never Hunts
It never hurts to show a little kindness every day,
to a friend, or just someone we meet along the way.
It never hurts to send forth love, for we have much to spare.
God gave us extra helpings, so we’d have some to share.
It never hurts to find someone who lives with pain and sorrow,
and bring that someone hope and faith - “enough to face tomorrow.”
It never hurts to pray for those who cannot find their way.
If we were lost and lonely too, we’d want someone to pray.
We can help a fellow-man to stand up straight and tall-
“who stumbles on life’s rocky road,” and it never hurts at all!

Welcome
Our Parish extends a warm welcome to all who have gathered this weekend for the Lance Cove Cemetery Mass and all those who have returned home or are visiting the Island for the weekend. We thank you for celebrating Eucharist with us. We trust you will enjoy the company of family and friends and in a very special way remember those who have died and gone to their eternal rest.

Our Parish continues to invite parishioners to remember their loved ones in a special way. You may also donate $10.00 and the light the Sanctuary candle in memorial of your loved one and the name will be acknowledged in our Parish bulletin. We thank the many parishioners who have already contributed to this memorial in honor of their loved one and we hope that this will invite others to do the same.
