Archbishop O’Brien’s Easter Greeting During the Easter Season it is customary in some cultures to greet people not with “hello” or some similar salutation but with the words “Christ is Risen” which elicits the response “Indeed, He is risen”. By using the present tense of the verb one indicates that the Resurrection is not simply an event which has taken place in the past but affirms belief in the enduing presence of the Risen Christ among us today. In a similar manner we can say “I was baptized” whereby we refer to a specific sacramental moment or we can say ‘I am baptized’. In the latter case we denote the enduring relationship which baptism establishes between us and the Risen Lord and the community of faith. When we read the Scriptures we see that the meaning and impact of the empty tomb was grasped differently by the disciples. John saw and believed whereas others such as Thomas would require an experience of the presence of the Risen Lord to convince him. At Easter the Church affirms and celebrates her belief in the Resurrection, however, each one of us has our own personal pace whereby the implications of this belief sink in and take hold of our lives. May the celebration of Easter 2007 be the occasion for an ever deeper insight into the meaning of Christ’s resurrection for your life. “Christ is Risen. Indeed, He is Risen” +Brendan M. O’Brien

EASTER MESSAGE & GREETINGS “THIS IS THE DAY THE LORD HAS MADE;
The full impact of what happened to us and for us during these days of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday is too much for us to take in. We really need another fifty days to deal with the emotional and spiritual effects of Holy Week. Just as the disciples of Jesus said, “It’s too much to believe! Victory over sin and death! An invitation to new life!” St. Thomas said: “I will not believe until I feel the nail holes and put my hand into his side!” The Resurrection was the newest and most unexpected wonder that God brought about for his people. To those with eyes opened by Faith, death and burial will never again be the end. Sickness, death and burial are just three more stages or steps on our own journey to final resurrection. Marked with the sign of the cross and faith, we will rise to share in the Easter glory of the Risen Lord. Congratulations to you on the very prayerful way you spent your Lent with daily Mass, the Way of the Cross and visits to the Blessed Sacrament. We tip our Easter bonnets to those who handled our ministries and the Church decorations which enhanced the worship environment every day in Lent and Easter. Many thanks for the way you encouraged your Pastor and one another May the Risen Lord bless you and yours, |
