TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY OF THE YEAR
SEPTEMBER 3rd, 2006

The primary reason why we are here is to worship God. Jesus said of the Pharisees: “This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” Hence, their worship was hollow and empty. It’s a danger that faces us all. We need God’s help in order to give him the kind of worship that will honor him and transform our lives. Let us turn to God now with sincere and humble hearts. Christ calls us to be faithful, to purify our hearts from sin and serve Christ in the love we share with others.
First Reading (Deut 4:1-2.6-8) Moses urges the people to be faithful to God’s Law, which is not a burden to be endured, but a source of life and wisdom.
Second Reading (Jam 1:17-18.21-22.27). It is not enough to listen to the word of God; we must put it into practice.
Gospel (Mk 7:1-8.14-15.21-23). Jesus tells the Pharisees that they have substituted their own laws for the Law of God, and are more concerned about outer cleanness than cleanness of heart.
