THIRTIETH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR
BARTIMAEUS
OCTOBER 29TH, 2006

In today’s Gospel we meet a blind man by the name of Bartimaeus. When he met Jesus his prayer was. ‘Lord, that I may see’. It is a prayer which we can make our own because in many ways we too are blind. Jesus wants to open our eyes too.
First Reading (Jer 31:7-9). The prophet foretells the return of God’s people from exile in Babylon. Even the most helpless will share in the joy of this great event.
Second Reading (Heb 5:1-6). This reading sets out the things that are required of a priest, and shows how Christ met these perfectly.
Gospel (Mk 10:46-52). Jesus hears the cry of a blind man and gives him back his sight.

The First Reading carries a message of joyful hope for the exiles in Babylon. The Lord will save what’s left of his people and bring them back from exile. Even the most helpless will share in the joy of this great event.
In Mark’s mind Jesus is the one who brings salvation to Israel. His healings are a sign of the coming of the kingdom (Gospel).
The story of Bartimaeus is as much a call story as a healing story. The expression ‘followed him along the way’ doesn’t simply mean that he joined the crowd on the road to Jerusalem. There can be no doubt what Mark intends: Bartimaeus followed Jesus on the way of Christian discipleship. His is presented as a model of faith.
It seems that the story was used in the early Church as a model of encouragement to believers and would-be-believers.
Bartimaeus serves as a model for those who are spiritually blind and whose lives lack direction. Through faith they can have purpose, energy and direction in their lives. An enthusiastic following of Jesus results in a happy and fulfilled life.

Dear Friends in Christ,

The Archbishop’s Annual appeal raises necessary funds to enable us to continue to provide pastoral leadership and support to our parishes. Two of these pastoral areas - Catechetics and Youth Ministry were highlighted in this year’s brochure. The costs related to providing the various programs increase annually. Therefore, we once again reached out to our Catholic community to ask for your continued generosity and prayers.

At this time I would like to express my appreciation to the pastors, parish representatives and staff, and committee volunteers who worked so tirelessly to promote the appeal and helped in so many ways at the parish level.

Yours in Christ,

Church Parking Lot
We have designated two parking spaces for the Physically challenged near the main entrance of the church. It is kindly appreciated that these two spaces be respected and used only by those who cannot use the stairs leading to the upper parking lot. We ask that the Fire Lane be free from all traffic especially in the event that we require emergency services such as the fire trucks or the ambulance. Please do not park in the fire lane

The Annual Cancer Survivors Service
(Celebration of Life) will be held in St. Mary’s Church, Craigmillar Avenue, on Sunday, October 29, at 7:00 p.m. An invitation is extended to all. Please Note: If you are a Cancer Survivor and would like to be a member of the choir for that service, please call Rev. Castella @ 579-7686. Choir members will meet for a brief rehearsal @ 6:00 p.m. just prior to the service
