Reflections for: The Fourth Sunday of Easter, May 7th, 2006

1st Reading: Acts 4:7-12:...There is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved. 2nd Reading: 1 John 3:1-2:...We will see God as he is.
Gospel: John 10:11-18....The Good Shepherd lays down his life for the sheep
The Fourth Sunday of Easter is Good Shepherd Sunday. Each year on this Sunday a passage from the Gospel of John is proclaimed on Jesus the Shepherd. Both the First Reading and the Gospel, emphasize leadership. In the reading from Acts, Peter displays leadership. Filled with the Holy Spirit, Peter speaks to the rulers and the elders fearlessly. He tells them the sick are cured, not by him, but by Jesus Christ, whom they had crucified, and who was raised from the dead. In the Gospel Jesus shows us how the shepherd leads the sheep and cares for them. In the same way it is our responsibility to care for those in our midst. It is the people who are called to shepherd those in their care. They have the responsibility to care for children both physically and spiritually; to teach them and to protect them. In our society we have also, Government leaders, law makers, doctors, nurses, police persons, security personnel, etc. All these people share in the mission of the Good Shepherd. This Sunday is also dedicated to World Day of Prayer for Vocations. Christians are invited to reflect on the meaning of God’s call and to pray for vocations. The whole Christian community shares the responsibility for fostering vocations. To do this we must be aware of the importance and need of vocations to the priesthood and religious life in our local Church. We can promote vocations in a very practical way by telling a young man or young woman that you think he or she has a vocation to the priesthood or religious life. Prayer for vocations deserves a place in daily prayer.

World Day of Prayer for Vocations
On the fourth Sunday of Easter, Christians are invited to reflect on the meaning of God’s call and to pray for vocations.

The Vatican Council documents (Church, Bishops, priesthood, religious life, laity, Church in the modern world) speak of the ways in which God calls us to serve and work for the spread of the kingdom. Christ the Good Shepherd continues to lead his people through his Bishops, priests, and deacons, and calls many to follow him in this way.
The whole Christian community shares the responsibility for fostering vocations. The first step is to live in a full Christian manner. Families with a lively spirit of faith, love and reverence contribute greatly to this work Spiritually active parishes, where people take a full part, help to promote vocations.

Mercy Congregation in Newfoundland & Labrador
...The Story of the Mercy Congregation in Newfoundland and Labrador...”WEAVERS OF THE TAPESTRY” by Sister Katherine E. Bellamy, RSM., will be launched on Saturday, May 13th from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Basilica of St. John the Baptist Museum. This new 963 page history of the Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy tells the story of the circumstances of the founding; the character, example, and teachings of the foundress; the sufferings, hardships, joys, and triumphs of the members; the accounts of new missions undertaken; and the tales of saintly and not-so-saintly individuals are all elements in a congregational history that has been passed down through the years and is still unfolding. This book presents in truth and simplicity the story of a group of ordinary women who did ordinary things but who did them extraordinarily well. It is an attempt to capture the spirit that called young women to give up home, with all that this implies, in an attempt to bring a little more equality and justice to the world. They did this by educating the young, caring for the poor and the sick, and empowering people to take
control of their own lives and destinies so that all people might live in dignity and peace.
