First Sunday of Lent
March 5th, 2006

Jesus prayed and fasted in the wilderness in preparation for his public ministry. Our lenten journey should be a wilderness experience for us leading us on to the Feasts of Easter and Pentecost. We can be assured that God, who made a covenant with Noah and sent his angels to minister to Jesus, will also be with us. During this Lent, let us change our ways and try to imitate Jesus more closely. Lent is a time of conversion, a time of new beginnings, a time to change and conform more closely to the image of God.

Lenten Retreat
On Saturday, April 1st , 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. , Canon Shirley Gosse will lead a Lenten retreat at the Masonic Lodge entitled; “Journey with Jesus to the cross”. Please call Mrs. Lena Cahill at 488 - 3167 and register in order that they may prepare lunch for all who attend.

Forms of Penance: Abstinence - Fasting - Almsgiving
Abstinence from meat is observed by all Catholics 14 years of age and older on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

Fasting is observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 . However, all medical concerns are to be respected.

Almsgiving: There are charitable actions by which we come to the aid of our neighbors in their spiritual and bodily needs. Giving alms to the poor is a witness to fraternal charity; it is also a work of justice pleasing to God. In our parish and community, food or money may be donated to the food bank to help the needy. The food bank is now under the leadership and the one who chairs all meetings is Corporal Boyd Merrill. Each Sunday of Lent we are asking the parish community to bring a specific food item for our food bank. ( Juice, sugar, beans, kraft dinner, tin milk, tin meat and other such items). On Holy Thursday, the day of the Lord’s Supper, the church asks us to remember the needy by bringing offerings of food. Thank you for your support and Christian charity.

Flowers In Memorial
During the Lenten Season, the church does not encourage Flowers to be used as a decoration . However, it is normal to use “some “ flowers during a time of funeral for pastoral reasons. Parishioners are encouraged to give consideration to donating to a charity of your choice in lieu of flowers for a funeral. We encourage individuals to donate your offering to our parish to assist us with the many needs of our church. As you know , the flowers donated during a time of a funeral last only a few days in our church and in reality, we see hundred s of dollars thrown out in the garbage immediately after a funeral. Please consider donating to your church in lieu of flowers and your donation will go to a good cause.
