Reflection for Second Sunday of Lent
March 12th , 2006

1st Reading: Genesis 22:1-2, 9-13, 15-18... God tested Abraham and spared his son.
2nd Reading: Romans 8:31-34... God did not spare his own Son
Gospel: Mark 9:2-10... This is my son, the Beloved. Listen to him

All readings today talk about “son” - Abraham’s son, Son of God, My Beloved Son.
Every time I hear this reading from Genesis, I find it so difficult to understand how a father could consent to sacrifice his son. But we have to remember that at that time in history, people believed they could please God by sacrificing their child. The child is a gift from God; therefore he or she belongs to God.

In the Gospel, Peter, James, and John are awe stricken when they witness Jesus: Transfiguration. They want to stay on that mountain forever. But then they are brought back to reality when they hear a voice from heaven saying, “This is my beloved Son; listen to him.”
We all experience times in our lives when we have to let go and come back to live our lives fully - it may be after the death of a loved one, or when the children leave home. Or it may be a very happy experience which we know can’t last forever. We have to listen to reason.
Listening is an art. Not everyone is a good listen. During Lent this year, practice the art of listening. Listen to the reading, listen to music, listen to those around you and when you pray, listen to hear what God has to say to you. Sometimes listening is not an easy thing to do, but with practice we can learn how.
Lord, help us to listen to you.

CHURCH CLEANING 1 FOR WEEK OF MAR 13TH TO 17TH
Madeline Lewis; Angela Johnson; Marg Lewis; Leo Byrne; Carol Clarke; Peter Power

Home Religion Program
Last Saturday we held meetings for the Home Religion Program and we had a very poor attendance and many have said that they did not hear about the meetings . Perhaps with all the activity at the school it is very easy not to hear the announcement in the school concerning the time and date of the meeting. It was a very important meeting and the themes for the Lenten season for years 1, 2 , and 3 were passed out. The programs are available at the church and you are asked to pick them up at church during the coming weekdays or weekend. (Before and after mass)

St. Patrick’s Day/Weekend
The many events are scheduled for the St . Patrick’s Day Weekend.
Card Game: Wednesday, March 15th
Bingo: Friday, March 17th
Irish Stew Supper & Pub Night: Saturday, March 18th
Concert: Sunday, March 19th
All plans are in progress and we ask for your support. Any donation of cookies or rolls towards the Irish Stew supper would be greatly appreciated.

Parish Secretary
During the past week representatives of our parish council interviewed seven candidates for the position of part time secretary for our parish. As you know Jody (our present secretary) has gained full time employment. It was a very difficult choice to select one from the seven applicants but in the end the committee chose Mrs. Patricia King. Since the job is only for 9 hours per week, the office hours will be Tuesday and Thursday : 12:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The selection of the secretary was difficult and we congratulate and thank all who had the interest to apply. As you know, Patricia is part time at the hospital and therefore with the extra hours working for the parish, she will have full time employment. Patricia will commence this job on Tuesday, March 21st at 12:30 p.m. and this employment will be under review in September. I trust that most will be happy with the selection .

Life Teen Retreat: Saturday, April 22nd
The youth of the archdiocese meet weekly in St John’s and they celebrate mass, sing songs, participate in discussion groups concerning issues of the church and have fun. The group is approximately 20 or so in number depending on the week and they have a wonderful experience. The youth which are called “ Life Teen” are coming to our parish for an evening of fun and prayer. They will gather on Saturday, April 22nd and they will attend our evening mass. During the mass they will provide and lead the music ministry and share in the various ministries of the liturgy. They will stay at the hall overnight along with chaperones and we will provide supper and breakfast. I invite the youth of our parish to attend and join in the fun. If you wish to attend, let us know. It can be great fun and I ask the youth to give serious consideration and attend . For more information call the office.

Lenten Folders
Lenten folders are available at the entrances of our church. Lent is a time for all of us to make our daily offering and consider supporting the needs of our parish. Please encourage the kids to make their sacrifice and to participate in the lenten offering.

Choir Practice
Choir members( new and old ) are asked to attend our weekly choir practice as we prepare for the many liturgies of the Lenten and Easter season. The dates for the choir practice are:
Sunday, March 12th at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 14th at 7:30 p.m.
Please make a special effort to attend.
