THIRD SUNDAY
JANUARY 22ND, 2006

Today's theme is conversion, although the Scriptures present difficulties. Our task is to keep the focus on conversion, granting that for most of us it is a lifelong process. Yet each lifetime is shaped by choices at every moment, choices that forge a life either responsive to God's call, or set against it. In this context Paul's dramatic instructions are a prescription for freedom so that we can choose wisely; we are not to be overcome by disordered attachments to our emotions, to our possessions, or to any other passing joy, "for the world as we know it is passing away." Today, may we appreciate that the transformation God invites is not a one-time event, but a daily response to the Word?
