Reflections for Passion/Palm Sunday, April 9th, 2006
Gospel: Mark 11:1-10.....Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord
1st Reading: Isaiah 50:4-7.....I did not hide my face from insult and spitting. The Lord helps me, therefore, I have not been disgraced..
2nd Reading: Philippians 2:6-11.....Jesus humbled himself. Therefore God highly exalted him.
Gospel: Mark 14:1-15.47.....The passion of Jesus Christ, the Lord

Blessing of Palms: Mark 11:1-10
This Gospel contains the account of Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. Yet in a few days the same crowd will demand his crucifixion.
During Lent, when did we identify with Jesus and then distance ourselves from him; ridicule others or remain silent when others were ridiculed; were biased towards others of different social background or religious belief.
Eucharist:
First Reading: Isaiah 50:4-7...Isaiah describes in great detail the experiences of his Suffering Servant which are seen as prefiguring those of Christ. In our suffering do we turn to God for help as Jesus did?
Psalm Refrain: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Jesus was conversant with the psalms. He made his exclamation - prayer - shortly before he died on the cross. Truly he was just as human as we are.
Second Reading: Philippians 2:6-11...Here we see Jesus practice what he preached. He humbled himself. God exalted him. So will God exalt those who humble themselves.
Account of the Passion: Mark 14:1-15:47
All the gospel writers concentrated on the story of the Passion - his agony in the Garden - betrayal by a friend -- false accusation - condemnation of the all Holy and Innocent One - mockery - scourging - crowning with thorns - carrying a cross to the place of execution and being executed. Mark, and the other evangelists, did not hesitate to record the horrible events of the Passion and Death of Jesus because they knew the ending was the Resurrection.
“If God could take something as awful as the crucifixion and transform it into something life - giving, then God could do the same with the words events in our lives.” (Little Books - Untener)
