Reflection
1st Reading: Jeremiah 31:31-34...The days are coming when I shall make a new covenant with the house of Israel and remember their sin no more.
2nd Reading: Hebrews 5:7-9...Christ learned obedience and became the source of eternal salvation for all.
Gospel: John 12:20-33...If a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it bears much fruit.

Two images stand out in the readings - the image of marriage as a sign of God’s fidelity to his people and the image of the grain of wheat. In the first reading God promises to make a new covenant with his people. The old covenant, given to Moses, was written on stone, but the new covenant will be written on the hearts of his people. The relationship between God and his people is likened to that of a husband and wife. In the Gospel Jesus says, “When a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it bears much fruit.” Jesus himself is the grain of wheat - the Word of God - the Seed - planted among God’s chosen people. He died on the Cross, to bring salvation to the world and through his death and resurrection he bore fruit abundantly.

Today’s Gospel invites us to empty ourselves, to die to our old ways, and to live more fully as followers of Christ. As we come near the end of our Lenten journey we could stop and ask ourselves., “How has my relationship with Jesus changed over the past few weeks of Lent?” “How has my relationship with my family and my neighbors changed?” How has my relationship with my Parish Community changed?”
