TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY
OCTOBER 2ND, 2005

In today's gospel Jesus retells the story-no doubt familiar to his hearers-that we also hear in the first reading. There Isaiah describes his people's distraction, failing to make a worthy reply to the care God has lavished on them. Jesus sharpens the story's point, making it apply to himself. In both passages people seem incapable of paying attention to the wonderful gifts laid at their feet. Paul is less the storyteller and more the preacher in the Letter to the Philippians, but his point is similar: "Whatever is true...honorable...just...pure...lovely...gracious...think about these things." Paul understands that attention to the loveliness of the world is a vital discipline for the disciple. Let the readings open your eyes to the goodness with which God surrounds you; then ask yourself, How will I open my eyes, mind and imagination to the goodness of God and so overflow with grateful love in return?
