FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT
NOVEMBER 27TH, 2005

"Watch!" is the word that will linger in people's memories-an excellent word for the beginning of Advent, as well as for the entire Christian life. The first reading laments the lack of watchfulness among the people, yet ends with an expression of trust in God's continuing care. Paul writes to the Corinthians to remind them of their call-a subtle reminder to remain alert to God's presence. Watchful discipleship becomes harder as the pre-Christmas shopping season begins, so many seemingly necessary errands and tasks stand between us and true alertness to God's designs. This Sunday, the assembly of God's baptized people, must remember that, as Paul says, they "were enriched in every way" and "wait for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ." Avoid the complaint of Isaiah, "there is none who calls upon your name," especially during this season of preparation for the Lord's coming.
