FIFTH SUNDAY
February 6th, 2005

As we approach the lenten season, the church proclaims in sacred scripture that we are called to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world. May our lives be a reflection of Christ as we go forth during the lenten season to be a community of forgiveness and therefore, by our Christian example, may we be the salt of the earth and the light of the world.

World Day of the Sick
"Jesus went forth healing the blind, the lame, the crippled, those afflicted with pain and disease." The ministry of Jesus to the sick is central to the life of the Church. Pope John Paul II in announcing this day stated: "I consider most appropriate, indeed, the bestowal upon the entire ecclesial community of an initiative which, as already practised in some nations and regions, has brought forth precious pastoral fruit." Each year this observance occurs on February 11, the memorial of our Lady of Lourdes. This day highlights the healing ministry of the Church. It reminds us that service to the sick and suffering cannot be neglected. It recognizes the great efforts of doctors, nurses, health care institutions and pastoral care givers to restore health to those afflicted with illness and disease. Let us pray for all those involved in the ministry of healing the sick.

Ash Wednesday: February 9th , 2005
On Ash Wednesday we stand before God . We reflect on our misdeeds of the past and on the ill habits of our present. Our frail spirits wrestle with sin, even as our frail bodies fight of death. We accept ashes as a reminder of our mortality. We fast from food as a sign of our sorrow.
In our lives, sin brings sorrow. Sin brings estrangement from the people we love, guilt when we lift our eyes to heaven , loss to a world starved for charity. Can you imagine living your life a better way? In the quiet of your heart, do you know what sin is darkening your sky? Are you willing to name it, specifically?
Accept ashes. Fast from food. Repent.
