PENTECOST SUNDAY
May 30th, 2004

Focus: Baptism unites us to Christ and to one another.

It is in Baptism that we are named Christian. It makes no difference if we are from the West or the East, poor or well-off, influential or powerless; we are linked as one body with Christ as our head. Just as when one part of our body is sick, the whole body aches-when one member suffers or is exalted, the whole Church shares the agony or the glory.

Vacation
Please Note: During the coming week, I will be taking ten days holiday and I will return home on June 11th. The summer months will be busy and the past year has been hectic at times and therefore, I will take a break. The Saturday evening mass will be at 7:00 p.m. due to the fact that Msgr. Jim Doody cannot be here until 7:00 p.m. I welcome Msgr . Doody to our parish and I thank him for his kindness in providing ministry in my absence. In the event of emergency, you can call the office or Rosanne Grant 488-2190 or John Kent at 488-2324. Hopefully they will arrange fore a clergy in my absence.

Year 1: Home Religion Program
On Sunday, June 20th at the 10:30 a.m. , the children who have completed their Year I Program will receive their certificate of achievement . All families are encouraged to attend mass and to congratulate the kids on their success. I thank all families who participated in this program and I encourage them to keep up the great concern to teach their children the love of Jesus.

Lottery Sweep
Sincere thanks to all who supported the lottery sweep sponsored by the Knights of Columbus and the parish. I wish to thank all who sold tickets and to all who purchased tickets. The list of winners is available at the entrances of our church. The parish cleared $ 3,875.00 and likewise the Knights of Columbus profited the same. I am very grateful for this income because it will be used as a portion of the salary to employ the parish maintenance man for the summer. Unfortunately we received no government grant this year and we must try to do it alone to meet the major expenses for the parish.

Welcome To The Lord's Table
Our parish welcomes to the Lord's table for the first time: Ian Bickford, Michael Bickford and Samantha Bickford. May the Lord bless you on this day and may you continue to share the gift of Eucharist so that you will always remain close to Jesus.

St Michael's High School
St. Michael's High School Dinner Theatre / Silent Auction will take place
Friday, June 4th. If you wish to purchase tickets for this event, please call the high school at 488-2828. You support is greatly appreciated.
Inner Strength
If you can start the day without caffeine or pep pills; If you can be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains; If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles; If you can eat the same food everyday and be grateful for it; If you can understand when loved ones are too busy to give you time; If you can overlook when people take things out on you when, through no fault of yours, something goes wrong; If you can take criticism and blame without resentment; If you can face the world without lies and deceit; If you can conquer tension without medical help; If you can relax without liquor, If you can sleep without the aid of drugs, THEN YOU ARE PROBABLY THE FAMILY DOG..........

Dirty Jokes and Marriages

Many wonderful wedding receptions leave a bitter taste in the mouths of guests by what comes out of the mouths of toast-makers. Quite often, without any consideration for the children present or the sensitive feelings of people who find it offensive, toast-makers bombard wedding guests with dirty jokes which add little, if anything, to the celebration of the event.

After months of preparation and planning during which the bride and groom have arranged for the church ceremony, the caterers, probably attended a marriage preparation program and did the 1001 details associated with the occasion, the big day arrives. Then, with heightened emotions, they engage in a Christian ceremony, welcome their wedding guests, and receive their blessings, settle in for the marriage feast, only to be and have their guest subjected to a string off-coloured jokes and remarks unfit for human consumption. Such behaviour does not fit into the Christian approach to marriage. Church members, who either arrange or take part in wedding receptions, should be sensitive to the occasion, the presence of children, and the feelings of their other guests. It is really a practical application of the Christian love we talk about.

If you are one of the 3000 couples to be married in Newfoundland and Labrador this year, take care that your speakers, like the other aspects of you marriage, will enhance and not embarrass you on the special occasion. Likewise, if you are to be a toast-maker at a wedding, take care so that those who have to listen to you will not have their celebration spoiled by your language.

Visitation of the Sick/Shut In's
During the coming week, Sister Elsie will visit the sick and shut in's of the parish. On Wednesday, Sister Elsie will visit those in the East End, West Mines, The Front. On Thursday, she will visit the remainder of the people who are on the monthly visitation list. If you are not home, please call Sister.
