THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY
NOVEMBER 16, 2003

Focus: Amid our daily struggles, we prepare ourselves for Christ's Second Coming.

Jesus notes the signs of the heavenly powers which will precede the coming of the Son of Man at the end time. Because we are so immersed by our very nature in this world, the death of the natural order holds tremendous fascination for us. It is through this purification that the Son of Man will return to gather the elect to the eternal kingdom.

CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH
Each week we hope to present a teaching of our faith from the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Our aim is to help us live and renew the faith we profess.

The Fourth Commandment: "Honour your father and your mother" (Deut 5:16; Mk 7:10)

-According to the fourth commandment, God has willed that, after him, we should honour our parents and those whom he has vested with authority for our good.
-Children owe their parents respect, gratitude, just obedience and assistance. Dutiful respect fosters harmony in all of family life.
-Parents have the first responsibly for the education of their children in the faith, prayer and all the virtues. They have the duty to provide as far as possible for the physical and spiritual needs of their children.
-Parents should respect and encourage their children's vocations. They should remember and teach that the first calling of the Christian is to follow Jesus.
-Public authority is obliged to respect the fundamental rights of the human person and the conditions for the exercise of his freedom.
