PENTECOST SUNDAY
JUNE 8, 2003
Focus: Lord send us your Spirit and renew the face of the earth.
The fifty days of Easter conclude with the praying of vespers on
Pentecost. Originally a Jewish harvest feast, Pentecost marks the birth of
the apostolic Church and the sending of the disciples into the world to
preach the Gospel. Pentecost can invigorate our life in the Spirit with
renewed awareness and energy to carry out the mission of Christ in our
daily lives.
Sympathy
Our parish extends sympathy to the family and friends of the late
Catherine Josephine Jackman and John King. May they be rewarded the gift
of eternal life.
Fathers Day
Next Sunday we will celebrate Fathers Day. We do have available some
Fathers Day cards which you can purchase at the church for $3.00 each.
These cards are designed as a spiritual bouquet and the names of all our
dads will be prayed for at our weekend liturgies.
Invitation
On Friday, June 27, 2003, Father Joseph Barton will celebrate his 25th
anniversary of ordination to priesthood. You are invited to a Mass of
Thanksgiving at St. Kevin's Church, Goulds at 7:30p.m. Since our parish
has shared in and supported Father Joe in his ministry, you are encouraged
to attend and renew friendships and acquaintances. Congratulations Father
Barton.

Dinner Theatre : July 18th: 6:00 p.m., Parish Hall
Plans are well under way for a Dinner Theatre to be held at the parish
hall on Friday, July 18th. The evening will consist of a Murder Mystery
Act, Silent Auction ,and Dinner . This wonderful evening will be organized
with superb talent and with professional care. During the evening we will
serve a three course meal with a complimentary glass of wine. We have a
limited number of 200 tickets available at a cost of $20.00 each. The
evening will begin at 6:00 p.m. with the auction followed by the Mystery
Murder Act which the guests must solve who is guilty of the crime. I
encourage our youth of senior high school to offer their support in
helping with this event. Tickets will be available next week at the
following places: Parish Office, Rosanne Grant, Margaret Murrin, or Ursula
Lahey. The deadline for the purchase of the tickets is Friday, July 4th.
All tickets must be purchased at this time in order for the event to be
organized with a list of the names of those who are attending the event.
Dinner Theatre and Silent Auction
On Friday, July 18th at 6:00 p.m., we will host our first Silent Auction
and Dinner Theatre. I am fully aware that there is a dance sponsored by
the Fire Department on the same evening and we are by no means competing
with their fund raising efforts. Therefore , we have cancelled our dance.
Our evening will be completed by 9:30 p.m. and it will be just in time for
the dance at the field. It is our hope that we can encourage the patrons
of the Dinner Theatre to support the Fire Department in their activity. It
was our original intention to have a dance but when we discovered there
was a dance sponsored by the Fire Department we changed our plans. In the
future, if we conflict with other events, please let me know. It is my
intention to provide good fun and activity during the summer and these
events such as a Dinner Theatre are not for a " money grab " as
some have said but to promote a little entertainment for
parishioners/friends and tourists to the Island.
RETIREMENT DINNER
Retirement dinner and dance honouring Francis Fitzgerald and Ken Reid on
Saturday June 14th, at Immaculate conception School. Tickets sell for
$15.00 single or $25.00 double. Tickets are available at the school and
must be picked up by Monday at 3:00p.m., June 9th.
THANK YOU
Sincere Thanks to the family of the late Patrick Shea for their generosity
in providing all the prizes for our card game. The prizes were excellent
and the "card game" was superb. The total net for the card game
was $763.85. To all members of the family we say thanks and our
appreciation to all who supported the game.
Summer Vacation: Ministries
During the summer months, many of you will be away on weekends and
enjoying a well deserved holiday. If you are not available to fulfill
weekend ministries at church, please find a substitute. Please do not
leave this to the last minute because it is difficult to get someone to
replace you a few minutes before mass. If you are not available for
ministry during the summer, please call the parish office or Rosanne Grant
so that the new summer schedule may be modified. Thank you for your
support.
Youth Rally
Youth are invited to a gathering at Torbay on Sunday , June 8th at 7:00
p.m. at Torbay Church. The youth will join the Archbishop for Mass,
followed by a social. All are invited.
Dirty Jokes and Marriages
Many wonderful wedding receptions leave a bitter taste in the mouths of
guests by what comes out of the mouths of toast-makers. Quite often,
without any consideration for the children present or the sensitive
feelings of people who find it offensive, toast-makers bombard wedding
guests with dirty jokes which add little, if anything, to the celebration
of the event.
After months of preparation and planning during which the bride and groom
have arranged for the church ceremony, the caterers, probably attended a
marriage preparation program and did the 1001 details associated with the
occasion, the big day arrives. Then, with heightened emotions, they engage
in a Christian ceremony, welcome their wedding guests, and receive their
blessings, settle in for the marriage feast, only to be and have their
guest subjected to a string off-coloured jokes and remarks unfit for human
consumption. Such behaviour does not fit into the Christian approach to
marriage. Church members, who either arrange or take part in wedding
receptions, should be sensitive to the occasion, the presence of children,
and the feelings of their other guests. It is really a practical
application of the Christian love we talk about.
f you are one of the 3000 couples to be married in Newfoundland and
Labrador this year, take care that your speakers, like the other aspects
of you marriage, will enhance and not embarrass you on the special
occasion. Likewise, if you are to be a toast-maker at a wedding, take care
so that those who have to listen to you will not have their celebration
spoiled by your language.
