The Submarine Miners at the entrance to the No. 4 Mine

The Submarine Miners were formed in 1995 to help raise funds to build the Bell Island Miners Museum. Since then they have performed numerous concerts, the highlight of which came in July of 2000 when they performed at Memorial Stadium with Folk of the Sea and Men of the Deeps.

Under the direction of Lorraine Cahill, the group performs a wide variety of Newfoundland folk tunes, popular favorites and mining songs. All of the members of the group worked for DOSCO, the iron ore company that ran the mines on Bell Island until 1966. When they sing about working underground, they can relate first hand. Note: The group stopped performing at the end of 2004.
