Subject: U-513 Attack in Wababa Harbor

Dear Sir or Madame, I am the administrator of the U-boat Archive website (address below).  I saw an article in the Globe and Mail concerning the how Bell Island is hoping to attract tourists.  The article mentioned four shipwrecks which were casualties of two 1942 German U-boat attacks.

I happen to be working on the records of U-513, one of the U-boats concerned.  I have just posted the records to the site including one,  named Post Mortems on Enemy Submarines the Interrogation of Survivors from U-513.  The specific address of this record is:  http://uboatarchive.net/U-513PostMortem.htm   Pages 11 and 12 of the record tell the story of the boat's attack on ships anchored in the harbor of Wabana.  This attack is an interesting one.  The U-boat commander displayed considerable skill and courage in penetrating that far into the bay, conducting the attack and making his escape.  The boat was struck a glancing blow by one of the ships fleeing from the harbor after his initial attack.  He quickly fired two torpedoes and sank the ship that had just run him over.  This report is based on the interrogation of the survivors of the boat which was sunk by U.S. Forces on a subsequent patrol.

I thought that perhaps the report might be of interest to those who would like to develop interest in the Bell Island area, particularly by divers who might wish to explore the wrecks and wanted to call it to your attention.  Best Regards, Jerry Mason
