Arthur Grant came to Bell Island as a teacher in 1930 and spent the remaining 40 years of his life in the teaching profession on Bell Island. He began teaching at St. Michael’s School at The front. He later moved to St. Kevin’s Boys’ School and shortly after became vice—principal. He spent over a quarter of a century at St. Kevin’s where he saw it grow from a three-room school to over 20 rooms and taught the sons of the fathers he had taught in earlier years.

He took an active part in all the school’s activities and for a number of years was responsible for the music program for The Annual St. Kevin’s Concert.

He was one of the first sponsors of the St. Kevin’s army Cadet Corps and was band instructor from its inception up to his retirement.

In 1954 he was awarded the “Bene Merenti” medal by The Holy See in recognition of many years of devoted and distinguished service to education in Newfoundland.

He was an active member of the N. T. A. on Bell Island and served as president and vice president during his lifetime.

He was a member of Conception Council K. of’ C. and held the office of Grand Knight and various other offices through the years.
