For Your Information.

Crossing time is approximately 20 minutes. However, this will vary with wind and sea conditions. Starting in February, and running sometimes as late as June, ice can also interfere with the ferry crossing.

While the recorded sailing information is updated daily, it is often not up-to-the-minute information. Current information can be obtained by calling the terminal attendants at either (709) 488-2842 or (709) 895-3541. They are usually available to answer calls while the ferry is crossing.

Many Bell Islanders use the ferry to commute to employment in St. John's. This has a couple of implications for travelers. First is the "commuters' line up" on the Bell Island side. A loading priority system allows commuting workers to board the ferry before other travelers. This usually only affects the first two or three trips of the day from the Bell Island side. The second implication is that there is often a long line up for the ferry traveling to Bell Island between 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. (When there is only one vessel in service). However there is no priority system in Portugal Cove. The ferry loads on a first-come first-served basis.
